

is an independent curator and formerly the Carolyn and Peter
Lynch Curator of Decorative Arts and Sculpture, Art of the Americas, Museum of
Fine Arts, Boston. She has lectured and written extensively on American
decorative arts, particularly jewelry, silver, and studio crafts. Some of her
recent publications include “The Cesnola Collection of Cypriot Jewels and
Charles Lewis Tiffany,” (with Yvonne Markowitz) Minerva, The International
Review of Ancient Art & Archeology, Vol. 17, No. 3, (May/June 2006): 36-39,
and “Things Intuitively Seen: The Jewelry of Miyé Matsukata” Metalsmith
(Spring 2005). Forthcoming: Silver of the Americas, Museum of Fine Arts,
Boston, Vol. 3 (2007), and (with Yvonne Markowitz) American Luxury: Jewels
from the House of Tiffany, (Antique Collectors Club, 2007).
is the founder, publisher and editor-in-chief of Adornment, The Magazine of Jewelry & Related Arts and she is the past president of The American Society of Jewelry Historians. She is the author of the definitive
book on jewelry of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Jewelry and Metalwork in the
Arts and Crafts Tradition, as well as author of 7 other books. She was a
contributing editor to Collector’s Clocks and Jewelry Magazine, and has
written for Heritage Magazine, The Journal of Antiques and Collectibles,
Unravel the Gavel, Auction Market Report for Gems and Jewelry and other
publications and was the editor of the American Society of Jewelry Historians Newsletter
for 9 years. Elyse also lectures frequently. She is currently working with
Yvonne Markowitz on two books - one about the jewelry of the American First
Ladies and another on Jacques Costume Jewelry, Inc. Their book, Imperishable
Beauty: Art Nouveau Jewelry will be published in summer 2008.
was appointed the Rita J. Kaplan and Susan B. Kaplan
Curator of Jewelry at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston in 2006. The first
curatorship of its kind in America, Ms. Markowitz oversees the museum’s
exceptional collection of jewelry. She was also the editor of the Journal of
the American Society of Jewelry Historians and is an editor of Adornment. Her
curatorial role in exhibitions that have included jewelry include:
Artifacts from Israel: Ancient Near Eastern Objects from the Marilyn and
Maurice Cohen Collection, Nubia: Gateway to Africa, Art of the Ancient
Mediterranean World, Pharaohs of the Sun: Akhenaten, Nefertiti, and
Tutankhamen, Egypt in the Age of the Pyramids: Highlights from the Harvard
University-Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Expedition, All That Glitters: the
Splendor of African Jewelry and Faces of History,Glories of Ancient Egypt.
Before becoming jewelry curator she worked as a research fellow in the
Egyptian section, Art of the Ancient World, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Yvonne has published extensively in the area of ancient and contemporary
jewelry and is the co-author of a new book on Tiffany & Co. which is to be
published this spring.
holds an M.Phil in Decorative Arts from the University of
Glasgow where she wrote her thesis "The Maison Léon Losseau: A Franco-Belgian
Art Nouveau Interior." Formerly a specialist in 19th and 20th Century
Decorative Arts at Christie’s King Street, London, she joined the Art of
Europe department at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 2003 for the V&A’s
traveling exhibition "Art Deco 1910-1939." Her current professional projects
are linked to the MFA’s planned expansion in 2010, in addition to
contributing research to the forthcoming 2007 exhibition Jewelry by Artists:
The Daphne Farago Collection. Presently, she is preparing an article on the
William D. Boardman collection of rings at the MFA, Boston.
is the Windgate Fellow, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She
received her BA in Art History from Smith College and will receive her MA in
Decorative Arts, Design, and Culture from the Bard Graduate Center in the
spring of 2008. Her thesis topic is “Josephine Hartwell Shaw and the Boston
Arts and Crafts Movement.”
is a curatorial research fellow in the Department of Textile and
Fashion Arts at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She has contributed to
numerous exhibitions and publications, including Fashion
Show: Paris Collections 2006, Crowning Glories: Two Centuries of Tiaras,
and the Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion.
